Elise Debrock: At The Wunderwall Antwerp

Mar 30 - May 5, 2024
Overview
In her artistic career, Elise Debrock portrays the everyday, or rather her everyday life. Always starting from tangible memories of landscapes, loved ones and people passing by, but she also ventures into nature or stages scenes and situations around her and her studio. The search for beauty and emotion is an important aspect in Debrocks work. Based on the choice of materials, color and technique, she goes in search of images that seem to escape reality. As abstractions of certain ideas and thoughts, they act as an escape of the everyday rush. These screenshots of her life and practice unite lightness and heaviness, playful humor and seriousness. This results in intimate work on both small and larger scales, scale, that shameless impose themselves in the space. Whatever materials or techniques she uses, Debrock always looks for a balance between freedom and control, reason and irrationality. This is reflected, among other things, in the diverse ways in which she uses brush and pencil. For example, in some works she approaches her subject with enormous patience, while in other works she works in a surprisingly nonchalant, intuitive way. Her eternal search is to find this balance functioning as a vicious circle (searching – getting closer – the idea of finding – losing – searching) that continues to drive, fascinate and amaze her.
